Sworn & Notarised Translation

Sworn & Notarised Translation

Court-registered sworn translation for Italian courts, notaries, public authorities, consulates, and immigration submissions.

Sworn translation in Italy — traduzione giurata — is the legally recognised form of translation for documents submitted to Italian courts, notaries, public administrations, and most official authorities. It is performed by a translator registered with a court tribunal, who provides a sworn declaration of faithfulness before a court clerk or notary. Without this procedure, translated documents are not accepted for legal use.

Our sworn translators are registered with the Tribunale di Napoli. We cover sworn translation for all standard document categories: civil status documents (birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates, adoption orders), academic qualifications, professional licences and certificates, criminal records, company registration documents, and immigration documentation.

The most common use case we see is immigration and citizenship. Whether you are a foreign national applying for Italian residency, an Italian applying for status in another country, or a family pursuing Italian citizenship by descent, the process requires certified and often sworn translation of a series of documents. We handle these comprehensively and accurately.

For documents requiring apostille legalisation in addition to sworn translation — which is required when using documents internationally between Hague Convention signatories — we provide advisory guidance and can coordinate with apostille services. The apostille itself is issued by the competent Italian authority and is a separate step from the translation.

In practice

An Australian-Italian family applying for Italian citizenship jure sanguinis required sworn translation of 14 Australian vital records into Italian. All documents accepted by the Italian consulate in Melbourne and by the Comune di Napoli registrar without revision requests.
A Ukrainian professional applying for Italian residency required sworn translations of academic and professional credentials. 6 documents across Ukrainian and English into Italian. Delivered in 5 business days. Residency application submitted successfully.

Questions about this service

In Italy, sworn translation (traduzione giurata) requires the translator to be registered with a court and to take a formal oath before a court clerk or notary. This is legally required for most official submissions. Certified translation (without the oath) is a simpler declaration of accuracy, not accepted by Italian courts and authorities for official use.
We provide apostille advisory guidance and can recommend services. The apostille is issued by the competent Italian authority (Prefettura or Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and is a separate procedure from the translation.
